Be deviant, be art

by Alvin

I've been drawing since I was a wee bub; the earliest picture I remember doodling was a lineup of rectangular & boxy shapes that resembled the entire cast of Transformers: G1, which I would happily re-draw and update as new Autobots appeared on the TV show.

Those were great applications of my artistic potential, and now a great deal has changed, improved and "lost" as my ability evolved. I'm not the best there is at what I do, but then again what I do has just as many "geniuses" as the mathematics field has superhuman brains that I'd be a "poobumface" to not be humble.

David put up the link in our link section earlier but I'd like to just take the time to formally plug my attempt at wearing my artistic heart on my sleeve.

If graphical links are your thing, click on the pic above to zoot right to there; don't be ashamed if you are, I'm sure there's someone out there that loves you just a little bit for being that deranged.

I'm still quite the "struggling artist", but if you are tantalized by comic-like art or are a fan of what little things I seem to do right - check it out and let me know your impressions. My vampiric tendencies feed off your opinions, so I'd greatly appreciate it.

Love and Poetry

By David

Throughout the past few weeks I’ve been attending various heats for the Australian Poetry Slam.

I love it. You’d think a poetry slam would be about geeks reciting Shakespeare, but it’s nothing of the sort: the heats are vibrant with hip-hoppers, eccentrics, mad men, mad women, bogans, skaters, political activists, brokenhearted teens, hippies – it’s crammed with all sorts of people.

Each winner of each heat wins money and enters the state finals. The winner of the state finals will then compete with the winners of all the other states in the Sydney Opera House, for the chance to win five thousand dollars.

My favourite part about the slam is the host, Ghostboy. He’s one crazy bastard. To find out why, come and attend the finals with me.

(Photo taken from here)

You have to have something a little bit wrong with you to write poetry. This girl I used to fool around with used to cut herself and cry and write poetry nonstop. One day she found happiness, one day the poetry stopped.

Where does art come from? Heartbreak? Loss? Gain? A girl? A boy? Injustice? Money? Love?

I’ll finish off with a Bukowski video I found on YouTube.

More details on the slam finals can be found here.

So that's a chocolate buffet

by Alvin

No job + barely any money = further spending & indulgence?!

Clearly in my dictionary for the vigilantly insane. Ever heard about a "Chocolate Buffet"? well David & I attended one such thing with a bunch of friends for lunch; part of some chocolate festival happening this month (props go out to Kat for setting it up).

Generally I always associate "buffets" with savory dishes or a mixture of both savory and sweet. But an "all you can eat" where rich, "diabetic enouraging" sweetness is the primary palette just scared me down to the marrow in my adamantium-laced bones, and just as equally made me respect the inventor of such a devilishly daring indulgence.

I didn't know what to expect cause i originally thought it was going to literally be gourmet chocolate from around the world, on offer to be tasted & tested. But it turned out to be somewhat better than what I anticipated, with various chocolate cakes, ice creams, candies, pastries and of course a decent chocolate fondue/chocolate fountain ready for our taste buds; the best thing about it - we could have as much as we wanted for the minimal price we paid, "Alleluia!!!"

The proof that we do lead interesting lives and don't steal other people's memories:

without further ado: the chocolate fountain fondue
(+10 points for rhyming)

the pastry fridge thing filled with eclairs, slices and tarts

Quite early we needed to have a game plan to make the most of it; it didn't seem right starting the day off with something sweet and heavy on the sugars, so I had something before hand to represent "breakfast" - so already my glass was "half full" or "half empty" (depending on your outlook in life). So pacing and not guzzling litres of water to quench the concentration of sweetness was implemented from the get go. Mind you. let me say that our table drank through pitchers of water like they were a 2-for-1 deal. I'm sure our waitress had a story to tell that evening to her pet cat and pet rock.

I didn't overdo myself this time (the only time I would ever risk exploding my gut with food is with BBQ ribs - but that's a tale for another time), only boycotting the cakes and aiming for things I could consume completely in my mouth in one gulp.
(+5 points for control and common sense)

A funny observation I made though: most of the diners were female; an obvious 90%, and our table of friends had the most ratio for guys:girls than any other in the restaurant. So for whom it may concern: chocolate buffets may be the new "pick up zones" or just a great place to take a date to without being betrayed by the dreaded "cock block".
(+10 points for saying it how it is)

Total: 25 points or life.

Singaporean Girls Kissing Each Other

By David

Okay if you haven't already heard, I'm going to Singapore near the end of this year. I decided to do a little research online to find out what the hell the country was all about and stumbled upon a popular blog by a girl named Xiaxue. I also stumbled upon her video series, called Xiaxue's Guide to Life, and found this:

(Note: this may not suitable for minors)

The moral of the story is that there is no moral to the story.

That's it for now. Peace out!

Our first post, episode 2: the procrastinating menace

by Alvin

It didn't help that I discovered "Syndicate Wars" on PS3 shop last weekend; buying it the night after - it was under $10!!!

So what if whatever 'scribbles' I have left to do are put on hold. The travesty lies in that even my exalted "Batman: Arkham Asylum" has to share its precious "with you time" with a grand daddy of the pixelated past, but in all honesty the SUPER travesty of it all is that I'm okay with that.

You have to understand, since me and my brothers first rented & played Syndicate Wars in the bygone days of '$20 buying you a whole day of contentment - where Timezone arcades where KING!', till the day our local video store mysteriously "lost it". I was captivated by its cyberpunk, dystopian setting & plethora of upgrades, weapons (I'm a sucker for upgradeable characters & items, items! ITEMS!) and extra gameplay delights (blowing up a bank to get some extra cash - of course! Logical!)

Since then we've been trying to find it in every overpriced but glitzy computer game specialist, every dishevelled electronics aile at every department store, and thouroughly searching the far, far reaches of that sweet, sweet, buxom busom of a street performer called "The Internet"... to no avail (okay so I could've found it there without a doubt, but back then I was a wuss in downloading stuff - couldn't tell which end of a torrent was 'up' or 'down').

So finding it now after many years of playing the "next gens" that came after it was a big deal, just look at it:

*okay so that's the PC version, same difference.

And that Dave is why I haven't got the blog's banner ready yet... but at least I got our profile pic up :D ...

pssst! you're the Jerry on the left.

Why learn when you can teach?

By David

Alvin and I did a lecture for a private design college on our hopefully-to-be-published, 12 episode graphic novel, Urban Monster.

I talked about how to develop a story and Alvin talked about how to develop great art. Anyway, here are some of our slides.

The first chapter of our series.

Alvin on drawing

It was a first for both of us. All in all we had a fun day teaching.
